Rohit Sharma on Wednesday announced his retirement from Test cricket after reports emerged that the selectors were on the look out for a new captain for the Indian team ahead of the England tour. (More Cricket News)
The 38-year-old was going through a terrible run of form in the red ball cricket and under his leadership, India were whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand for the first time ever at home and then lost 3-1 to Australia Down Under. In both the series, Rohit's numbers with bat were atrocious.
Having already retired from T20Is after leading India to a T20 World Cup last year, Rohit will now only be playing ODIs where his eyes will be on winning the 2027 Cricket World Cup, a trophy missing from his cabinet.
As India look for another captain in red ball cricket, a recent statement by Rohit has again found relevance. In a recent interview to sports journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit had said how selectors always look for young captains and thus there were chances of him not getting the leadership role.
“Haan mujhe laga aise. Kabhi kabhi hota hai sabko young captain chahiye hota hai. Jo 10 saal, 15 saal captaincy kare toh mujhe aise laga ki abb mujhe na mile. But I am forever grateful ki mujhe mauka mila [Yes, that's what I felt. Sometimes everyone wants a young captain—someone who can lead for 10 to 15 years. So I thought maybe I won’t get the opportunity. But I’m forever grateful that I did],” Rohit had said.
“Mujhe bhi pata hai mai 10 saal captaincy nahi kar sakta hun. But jo bhi time mujhe milega, I have to make the most of it. Kaise bhi karke I have to get the full potential out [I also know I can’t captain for 10 years. But whatever time I do get, I have to make the most of it. No matter what, I have to bring out my full potential],” he added.

India yet again look for a captain and even though Jasprit Bumrah has proved his captaincy credentials, reports suggest the pace spearhead might not get the role. Shubman Gill reportedly appears to be the frontrunner even though he could not find a place in the Playing XI in some games of the Australia tour.
