The wicket-keeper batter was hit on the finger by Jofra Archer's short ball during the fifth T20I between India and England in Mumbai. Samson was out soon after that for a rapid 16 off just seven balls. The 30-year-old could not come out to keep wickets during India's fielding and the duty was taken over by Dhruv Jurel.

Despite the injury, Samson remains on track for participation in the Indian Premier League 2025. As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, he will take around a month to recover after the surgery. This gives Samson enough time to be fit for the upcoming IPL where he will be leading the Rajasthan Royals.

The 2025 edition of the IPL is expected to begin on March 21.

Samson leads the Royals in the IPL and, in 2022, took the franchise to its first final since the inaugural season in 2008. After losing the 2022 final to Gujarat Titans, Samson also led the franchise to the play-offs last season.

The injury forced Samson to miss Kerala's Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Jammu and Kashmir. The wicket-keeper batter had also missed out on Vijay Hazare Trophy after not participating in a pre-season preparatory camp.
