The world of Indian cricket is abuzz with speculation following Rohit Sharma's decision to retire from Test cricket on May 7, 2025. With India's tour of England looming, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the new Test captain during a crucial meeting in Mumbai on May 23. The selection committee, spearheaded by Ajit Agarkar, will also reveal the squad for the England tour next week.

Rohit Sharma, after a challenging period with the bat, concluded his Test career. In his last eight Test matches, he managed only a single half-century, with an average of 10.93. The seasoned batter announced his retirement ahead of the England tour, drawing the curtains on a Test career that saw him play 67 matches and accumulate 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57.

The frontrunner to inherit the captaincy mantle is widely reported to be the young and promising Shubman Gill. The BCCI is believed to be looking for a leader who can serve the team for an extended period, and Gill, with his consistent performances and leadership potential, fits the bill.

However, Gill isn't the only name in contention. Jasprit Bumrah, who has previously led the side in two Test matches during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is another strong candidate. Concerns regarding his workload management, which might see him miss some matches in the upcoming five-match series against England, could influence the selectors' decision.

Shreyas Iyer, following a commendable run in domestic cricket, is also a name being discussed. However, his inconsistent presence in the Test squad might make him a less likely choice for the top job.

KL Rahul, a seasoned campaigner and a reliable performer for the Test side in recent years, is another experienced option. Despite his credentials, the BCCI might lean towards a younger captain with a long-term vision, potentially sidelining Rahul for the captaincy role.

Meanwhile, the dynamic Rishabh Pant is tipped to be appointed as the vice-captain. After KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, Pant is the most experienced player in the current Test setup.

The decision made by the BCCI will not only determine the leadership for the upcoming England tour but will also set the tone for the future of Indian Test cricket in the post-Rohit Sharma era.
