Defense Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated a new BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production facility on Sunday at the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor in Lucknow. The launch comes at a time of heightened military tensions with Pakistan.
The state-of-the-art facility, constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore, is designed to produce between 80 to 100 BrahMos missiles annually. The BrahMos, jointly developed by India and Russia under the BrahMos Aerospace venture, is a versatile missile with a strike range of 290 to 400 kilometers and a top speed of Mach 2.8, reports said. It can be launched from land, sea, or air platforms and employs a "fire and forget" guidance system.
BrahMos Missiles
In addition to standard BrahMos missiles, the newly inaugurated Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility will also produce 100 to 150 next-generation BrahMos missiles each year. These upgraded variants are expected to be ready for deployment within a year.
Significant improvements in the next-generation missile include reduced weight—1,290 kilograms compared to the current version라이브 바카라 2,900 kilograms—and an enhanced range of over 300 kilometers, reports said. The new missile라이브 바카라 lighter design will also allow aircraft such as the Sukhoi to carry up to three missiles, compared to just one of the current version.
BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile is a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, named after rivers Brahmaputra and Moskva.
Its successful test firing was done on 22 March 2018 with an indigenously developed seeker at Pokhran test ranges in Rajasthan.
The then Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on X “Formidable Supersonic Cruise Missile #BrahMos was successfully flight tested at 8:42 AM today at Pokhran test range, Rajasthan. The precision strike weapon with Indian-made seeker flew in its designated trajectory and hit the target with pin-point accuracy.”
The Rs 300 crore facility is a part of the UP라이브 바카라 Defence Industrial Corridor. It represents the country라이브 바카라 commitment to self-reliant defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence said on X on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
It includes not only missile production but also testing, integration, and a materials complex for aerospace-grade components, the post further mentioned.
Background and Strategic Significance
The production unit is a key part of the Defence Industrial Corridor initiative, first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2018 Global Investors’ Summit. The foundation stone for the facility was laid in 2021, marking a major step in India's push for defense self-reliance and indigenous manufacturing.
The facility is expected to significantly boost India라이브 바카라 missile production capabilities and enhance the country라이브 바카라 strategic deterrence amid growing regional security challenges.
