Weather Update: Cold Wave Intensifies In Delhi-NCR After Overnight Rains; Tamil Nadu, Karnataka Brace For Rain

Heavy rains lashed over Delhi-NCR on Wednesday night, intensifying the cold wave already prevailing in the region. Meanwhile, southern states are also bracing for rainfall over this week.

Heavy rains lashed over Delhi-NCR over-night, intensifying the cold wave in the region. On Wednesday, the national capital region recorded low visibility due to the presence of dense fog.

Meanwhile, in the south, Tamil Nadu continues to brace for another spell of rain.

Heavy Rains Lash Delhi-NCR Overnight

As per the IMD, Delhi experienced very dense fog on the morning of January 15, "with visibility dropping to zero at Safdarjung and IGI Airport from 8:30 am, persisting until 11:30 am".

An orange alert was issued across the NCR region due to the fog. However, with heavy rains lashing the region overnight, the cold wave is expected to intensify.

Dense Fog To Prevail

As per the Indian Meteorological department, dense to very dense fog is expected to prevail over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi over the next two days.

Due to the fog in Delhi, around 29 trains have been delayed across north India. Additonally, the dense fog was accompanied by the determination of the AQI levels across the capital, resulting in the implementation of GRAP-IV.

Rain To Lash Over South India

In the south, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over the weekend in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Kerala and Mahe are also expected to witness rain spells on Sunday.

In Tamil Nadu, rain alerts have been issued for six districts for January 18, namely,  Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram.

Rain has also been predicted for parts of Karnataka on Thursday. The districts of Tumkur, Ramanagara, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural and Bengaluru City are expected to witness a spell of rainfall.
