Gujarat Titans confirmed on Saturday that New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips will miss the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season due to a groin injury. Phillips has already returned home to recover. (Schedule | Teams | Points Table)
The injury occurred during GT's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6th, which the Titans won. Phillips, who had not yet featured in the playing XI this season, was on the field as a substitute fielder during the final over of the powerplay in SRH's innings.
While fielding at point, he collected the ball and, upon throwing the ball back, visibly overstretched his groin, collapsing in pain. He required assistance from the team staff to leave the field.
Despite being acquired for his base price of Rs 2 crore at the mega auction last year, the Kiwi international hadn't broken into the playing XI for the 2022 champions in the current season before the injury cut his tournament short.
Phillips becomes the second player from the Gujarat camp to head home prematurely. Earlier, South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada departed for personal reasons. The franchise has not yet indicated who might be brought in as a replacement for Phillips.
The news comes as a dent in squad depth for GT, even as they enjoy a successful start under captain Shubman Gill. They currently lead the points table with four wins out of their first five matches.
The team wished Phillips well in their official statement, saying, "Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery.
GT is scheduled to play Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, April 12, in Lucknow, before returning to their home ground in Ahmedabad to host Delhi Capitals on April 19.
