Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries (RIL), has applied for a trademark for 'Operation Sindoor', just hours after India's military operation against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on early Wednesday morning.

Reliance Industries became the first to apply for the trademark for the codename, as per a report in Bar and Bench.

On May 7, apart from Reliance, there were three more applications for the word-type trademark, all under Class 41 of the Nice Classification, which pertains to media, cultural, educational, and entertainment services.

The trademark filings for 'Operation Sindoor' were submitted in between 10:42 am and 6:27 pm.

The other three applicants include Mumbai-based Mukesh Chetram Agrawal, retired Group Captain Kamal Singh Oberh of the Indian Air Force, and Alok Kothari, a Delhi-based lawyer.

All four applications have listed the term as “proposed to be used”, which indicates future commercial plans, the same report stated.

This is not new. During the Balakot air strikes in 2019, producers rushed to register film titles right after the attacks.

What is covered under Class 41 of the Nice Classification?

  • Education and training services

  • Film and media production

  • Live performances and events

  • Digital content and publishing

  • Cultural and sporting activities

Class 41 is often used by OTT platforms, production houses, broadcasters for shows or documentaries and event organisers, which suggest that the term might soon appear as a movie, web series, or documentary title.

For the unversed, Reliance Industries covers Reliance Entertainment, MediaWorks, Big Synergy, and Reliance Animation. It also has stakes in Viacom18, Network18, Balaji Telefilms, Eros International and Amblin Partners.

About Operation Sindoor

In retaliation to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, the Indian Army launched 'Operation Sindoor,' conducting 24 precision missile strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), including Muridke and Bahawalpur.

The term 'Operation Sindoor' was apparently chosen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a tribute to the women who lost their husbands during the terror attack.
