As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season nears its opening match on 22 March, the focus is on the tournament's exhilarating aspects. One of the most nail-biting moments is the ‘Super Over’, which occurs when an IPL match ends in a tie. (Schedule | Teams | Points Table)
In a Super Over, the two teams play a single over of cricket, and the one who scores more runs wins the match. In the 17 seasons from 2008 to 2024, IPL has witnessed 14 Super Overs, the last one coming in the game between SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2021.
While Super Overs are the perfect way to act as tie-breakers between two evenly-matched teams, in rare occasions, even they end up as ties, following which subsequent Super Overs are played until a winner is decided.
This happened just once in the history of IPL. The match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in 2020 ended in a tied score of 176 each. In the Super Over, both teams restricted each other to five runs, which meant another six balls of cricket, during which Punjab chased down a total of 12, making them the first and only team to win in the second Super Over.
Even though the concept of Super Over is simple, there are complex rules that define how many of them can be played and how long it can go on. Let라이브 바카라 see what the BCCI guidelines say about the same.
What Do BCCI Rules Say About Super Overs?
According to the BCCI라이브 바카라 new rules that were informed to the IPL 2025 franchises after a captain라이브 바카라 meet, as per Cricbuzz, an unlimited number of Super Overs can be played until a winner is decided. However, crucially, the winner must be decided within one hour of the end of the main match.
The BCCI clarified that the first Super Over must start after 10 minutes of the game라이브 바카라 end, and the next ones must start within five-minute gaps between each other. As such, the one-hour window provided by BCCI allows for three to four Super Overs, which would be a realistic time frame to get a winner.
“If the Super Over is a tie, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until a winner is determined.” the BCCI guidelines read. “Other than in exceptional circumstances… an unlimited number of Super Overs may be played where necessary to determine a result.”
In the unlikeliest of events, where the result is still a tie even after the stipulated one-hour time period, then the match will be declared a tie, the guidelines read.
The rules also clarified that any batters who were dismissed or bowlers who already bowled in the previous Super Overs will be ineligible to take part in the next ones. Furthermore, the last over라이브 바카라 fielding restrictions will apply, and each team will get one unsuccessful DRS review during the contest.
