According to police, one person, an Atalanta fan, was stabbed to death during the clashes between the supporters of the two sides. As per local police, an argument ensued in a pub in Bergamo on Saturday night after an Inter fan chanted provocatively.
The argument snowballed into a confrontation which spilled into the streets. A fan was then stabbed in a street near the Atalanta stadium. Police said emergency services arrived swiftly but were unable to save his life.
A boy in his late teens has been arrested. He reportedly told the police that he acted in defence of his brother.
Atalanta thrashed Monza on Sunday and their fans unfurled banners in memory of the deceased supporter. The banner read: “Claris Ovunque con noi” (“Claris everywhere with us”).
The club did not officially comment on the incident but manager Gian Piero Gasperini said, "what happened to our fan must never happen again" in a press conference after the match.
Last month, 13 police officers were injured during clashes between AS Roma and Lazio supporters.
Atalanta are currently third in the Serie A standings, 13 points behind leaders Napoli.
